How to read a Saju chart: one worked example

Start with the four pillars, then locate the Day Master and read the element count. They answer different questions.

The birth record below is fictional. Its chart was calculated with the same engine used on this site. Keep an eye on the day column and the element count: this example makes their difference easy to see.

1. The inputs and calculation rule

Example inputs: April 17, 1988, 3:00 p.m., exact birth time, Philippines. The current service uses the Asia/Manila time zone and Manila's representative longitude, 120.9842° E, for this country selection. It applies a true-solar-time correction and a midnight day boundary. In this example the calculated solar time is about 3:04 p.m., so the hour remains in the same two-hour period.

A country is not an exact birthplace. Someone born far from Manila, or close to an hour or day boundary, should check the calculation method and geographic limitations before treating a pillar as certain.

2. The four pillars

Each pillar pairs a Heavenly Stem with an Earthly Branch. Read the day stem separately: it is the Day Master.

PillarStemBranchPair
Year戊 · Earth辰 · Earth戊辰
Month丙 · Fire辰 · Earth丙辰
Day壬 · Water寅 · Wood壬寅
Hour戊 · Earth申 · Metal戊申

The Day Master is 壬 (Ren), Yang Water, because 壬 is the stem of the day pillar. In our free snapshot, its editorial title is The Expansive Navigator. That title is a reflection prompt created by Hello Saju, not a traditional diagnosis or a scientifically verified personality type. The Year pillar does not override the Day Master.

3. Why the most common element is not the Day Master

Count both characters in every pillar. 戊辰 contributes two Earth positions; 丙辰 adds Fire and Earth; 壬寅 adds Water and Wood; 戊申 adds Earth and Metal. The total is Wood 1 · Fire 1 · Earth 4 · Metal 1 · Water 1. Earth appears four times. The Day Master is still Water because it is the day stem, 壬. The five-element guide explains the count in more detail.

This simple count is not a measure of the strength, favorability or quality of an element. A fuller interpretation may consider season, hidden stems and relationships among pillars; a high count alone is not a verdict. See the ten Day Masters for the distinction between a type label and the rest of a chart.

4. What the free result actually adds

For 壬, Hello Saju's fixed free profile describes exploring connections and possibilities. It offers two strengths, a caution about scattering attention, and a practical balance tip. These sentences are selected from a fixed profile after the chart is calculated; they are interpretive prompts, not facts established about a person by the calculation. In this example the free result calls the element distribution “Earth remains the clearest emphasis in this chart.” It does not say that a person is “an Earth type.”

The birth-time confidence note matters. This example supplied an exact time. If your time is unknown, Hello Saju compares possible birth hours rather than assigning a fictional one. Read what changes when birth time is unknown.

5. Try the interpretation against a real situation

The short 壬 profile mentions exploring many options. Think of a choice you are making now. Have you kept several routes open because you are still learning, or because it is difficult to commit? If the description does not fit, set it aside. The chart supplies a starting point for reflection, not evidence of what will happen.

Method and editorial notes

Chart values on this page were checked against the production engine's output for the fictional inputs above on October 24, 2026. The count described here is Hello Saju's visible stem-and-branch count, not a universal rule used by every Saju school. The Encyclopedia of Korean Culture's Saju entry provides cultural context for the Four Pillars and stems; it is not the source of our profile wording. Questions or corrections: [email protected].
