What is my Day Master?

Your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of your birth-day pillar. There are ten possibilities: five elements, each expressed as yin or yang.

By TreeGuard · Updated October 24, 2026

You may meet the term ilgan (일간) in Korean or Day Master in an English Saju or BaZi chart. Look for the top character of the day pillar. That character is the reference point used to describe relationships between the other parts of the chart. It is not your birth-year animal and cannot be found from your birth month alone.

How to read your result

Suppose your result says Yi · Yin Wood · 乙. Those are three ways to identify the same Day Master. “The Adaptive Builder” is the title Hello Saju attaches to that type. It does not mean Wood must be the most common element in your chart.

The element balance below it answers a different question: how the elements are distributed across the chart. A Wood Day Master can have a chart with more Fire than Wood. The Day Master stays Wood because it names one specific stem; a count of elements summarizes several positions.

Want to see that distinction in a complete chart? Follow our worked Four Pillars example, calculated with fictional birth details.

Wood: direction and adaptation

Jia (甲) and Yi (乙) are the two Wood stems. In our free profiles, Jia describes persistence and Yi describes adaptation. Think of a plan that went off course: did you keep the destination and change the route, or keep pushing along the original route? Either response can be useful in the right circumstances.

Fire: expression and attention

Bing (丙) is the outward expression in our Fire profiles; Ding (丁) is the focused attention. Getting a whole group talking and noticing that one person has gone quiet are different ways of being present.

Earth: stability and care

Wu (戊) and Ji (己) both use the language of care in our profiles. Wu holds the larger structure; Ji attends to the details that keep it working. If the description fits, notice which responsibilities you chose and which ones you simply inherited.

Metal: decisions and discernment

Geng (庚) is described through decisions; Xin (辛) through discernment. They raise a familiar question about standards: which details change the outcome, and which can wait until the next version?

Water: exploration and observation

Ren (壬) explores the possibilities in our Water profiles. Gui (癸) observes before speaking. One may leave too many options open; the other may leave a thought unspoken. Read these as prompts to check against your experience, not instructions about how to be.

Can two people have the same Day Master?

Yes. There are only ten Day Masters, so many people share one. Their year, month, day branch and hour may differ, as may the relationships between those parts. Sharing a Day Master does not establish that two people have the same personality, future or romantic compatibility.

Can I find it without knowing my birth time?

You can select “I don’t know” in our calculator. Hello Saju compares possible birth-hour patterns and shows a confidence note. Read that note alongside the result, especially when a date or solar-time boundary could matter. An unknown hour is not replaced with a made-up noon or midnight. See how we handle an unknown birth time.

Why might a different calculator disagree?

Check the birth date, calendar, time zone, day-boundary convention and solar-time correction before comparing interpretations. Hello Saju currently supports South Korea and eleven Southeast Asian countries, using one main time zone and representative coordinate per country. This is an approximation, especially in countries spanning several time zones. See our published calculation method before interpreting a boundary case.
